What is scrap metal beneficiation?
Beneficiation is the process of upgrading and refining scrap metal to improve its quality, remove contaminants and maximise its value. While the term is traditionally associated with mineral processing, in the scrap industry it refers to a combination of physical and mechanical techniques – such as shredding, magnetic separation and cleaning.
These processes remove unwanted materials like dirt, coatings, plastics and insulation (often referred to as “gangue”), producing a high-grade metal product. The result is scrap that meets the strict purity requirements of foundries and steel mills, making it suitable for direct reuse in manufacturing.
